Canton in the top three for company density
The cantons of Zug, Nidwalden and Obwalden showed the highest density of companies in Switzerland in the first six months of this year.
The study, produced by the Dun and Bradstreet, "the world's leading source of information of business information, credit checks and company evaluations", showed that, when the population of the cantons is taken into account, there are more companies registered in the three central Swiss cantons per head of population than elsewhere in the country. Of the other three central Swiss cantons, Schwyz is fifth in the list with Lucerne in the middle and Uri at the bottom.
The study also looked at the number of bankruptcies in the first six months of the year, with the number increasing by 9% in central Switzerland, third in the list after the area around Lake Geneva with an increase in bankruptcies of 20%, and just below the Zurich area, where bankruptcies increased by 13%.
When compared with the period for the same time of last year, the number of bankruptcies in Lucerne decreased by 14% and by 13% in Uri 13%, with Nidwalden's rate remaining the same as in 2010. The number of bankruptcies in Schwyz increased by 4%, by 21% in Zug and by 82 % in Obwalden. The national average showed an increase in 16%.
In looking at the number of new companies set up in Switzerland, the overall figure for central Switzerland rose by 4%. In examining the situation in the individual cantons, the number of new companies set up in Lucerne rose by 17%, and by 5% in Nidwalden. In Schwyz 2% fewer new companies were set up, as in Zug, and in Uri 29% fewer companies were registered.
As for the figures relating to the whole of Switzerland, these showed that 7% more companies were set up than in 2010.
According to the company's website, Dun and Bradstreet, which belongs to the Swedish Bisnode Group, has had offices in Switzerland for over 100 years. With its headquarters in Urdorf and branches in Lausanne and Lugano, the company has a turnover of USD 1.4 billion and employs 6,000 worldwide.
