Heineken brings the Eichhof horses back to Lucerne

Heineken is reviving the Eichhof Brewery tradition and bringing back the Eichhof horses to Lucerne. As from Wednesday 13 April 2011 the team will be delivering to customers in the Neustadt and Old City districts twice a month.

The Eichhof team of horses was a regular sight in Lucerne up until 1993, much to the delight of both young and old. Now, after a gap of 18 years, Heineken Switzerland is bringing the  brewery horses back to the home-town of Eichhof beer. Every two weeks, on Wednesdays, the powerful team of horses will be making deliveries to some of the brewery's customers. In the mornings they will going through the Neustadt area and to the Old City in the afternoon. What is more, the Eichhof team will be attending various events in central Switzerland.

As from 13 April 2011, Waspetaja, Gustav, Simi, and Stani will be helping to promote the Eichhof brand. Two of the cold-blooded animals come from the special "Vladimir Heavy Draught Horse" breed in Russia. A total of five horses of this breed, which is threatened with extinction, have found a new home with coachman Fredi Hess in Langnau. "When Heineken Switzerland asked me last year if I would like to act as coachman for the new Eichhof team, it meant I was able to fulfil a childhood dream. Naturally I accepted without a second thought. Shortly afterwards my wife and I went to Russia and chose the horses. We are very proud to have what are so far the only five horses of this race in Western Europe on our ranch."

Horses have been part of 31-year-old Hess' life since he was 13 when he used to help out as an assistant coachman on his parents' farm in Engelberg. Together with his wife, Hess, who is also a trained farrier, has been training four of the horses for their new task over the past few months. As a carriage and pair they will be delivering beer to between 6 to 10 pubs on their way through Lucerne.
